Jerry Falwell, Dead at 73
An iconic religious political leader of the 1980s has died. He will be missed by many, I'm sure.
I'm going to really go against the grain of the reaction of most the conservasphere with my following statements.
More after the jump
My empathy lies with the friends, colleagues, and of course family of Falwell. He was a good man. His death was not wished or desired by me one bit.
In later years, though, I thought that he was more of a liability to the Conservative cause due to some spectacular hipshots that went greatly awry. To extend the metaphor further, Dick Cheney would turn down a hunting invite from Falwell.
I guess the bad taste left in my mouth stems from the statements he made in 2001 just two days after the September 11th attacks (the following is from the NPR (!) obit, link via Protein Wisdom):Falwell claimed that the attack was God's judgment on America's immorality.
"I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians, who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way all of them who try to secularize America I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen.'" Now that we've had a few years under our belts, and more than 'witnessed' the perversion of a certain Kansas Church to stomach listening to this blame game krep any longer. I feel that this sort of media condemnation of innocent people is for the addlebrained and politics-addicted. Since that point, I wish Falwell had settled back in a life of quiet retirement.
Anyhow, he certainly did his job when it came to uniting Cristians under an umbrella of political force that today enjoys some virility we wouldn't still have, and for that, I thank him.
