Steampunk Apple iPhone
Gizmodo is running a contest where you can take an "Apple Product Mockup Kit" where you can make your own version of an Apple product. I don't even think there are any prizes offered, but I always wanted to try my hand at a Steampunk iPhone. I would buy one of these.

In the end, I didn't even use the kit assets for my mockup aside from the display buttons.

Bandwidth Thievery
If there is something I can't abide, it's a bandwidth thief. I run a number of websites, both for the day-job and my freelance operations, and then there are my personal sites. Among them is Metallicity.com, a venerable 3D graphics texture site of better images I've knocked together over the years. It's a free resource for artists to grab some large resolution textures for free, for non-commercial and non-republishable use (without permission, anyhow).

For some weeks I've noticed that my bandwidth usage has skyrocketed for my home-office mini hosting operation, not commenserate with the increasing business I've been doing lately. I usually can guess at what that means: bandwidth pirates. In the terms of use for the images, it is VERY clearly laid out that linking directly to one of my texture images is completely verboten, as every time someone links to their web page, it loads from my server and my internet lines; it costs me money and latency. Moreover, these images are WAY larger than normal images used for such purposes; it puts a tremendous strain on things. One wonders why the webmaster(s) of these sites would choose files that would result in such long load times.

I sent some cut-it-out letters to a couple of Italian music forum and myspace sites telling them to knock it off, but they were ignored.

This is what they looked like before I decided I'd had enough:
Screencap of the Alan Altieri forums

Screencap of the Paolo Pilo Myspace Page, one among many duplicate "Palbert Music" myspace pages resulting in thousands of load requests alone.

Some might question my sense of propriety and civility, but remember that they already violated VERY CLEAR terms of use to begin with and then ignored warnings, on top of basic web etiquette. Here's the result of my piss 'n vinegar:

Introducing the newly revamped Alan Altieri forums!

Hey Paolo, nice site you got there!

I actually don't like doing this, generally speaking, but it's my image and my bandwidth. Moreover, I could have been a whole lot more vulgar and used other images of not so nice things. I think this makes the point, though.

Don't steal bandwidth!

UPDATE: For those without a long history of my blogging, I have a history of doing this (LGT goes to my retired Sanctuary Blog).

Teddy Has Cancerous Brain Tumor
Story here at AkronNewsNow

I don't like the Senator from Massachusetts. Never did. But I don't wish this sort of thing be reason he is removed from the Senate (and indeed, from his family).

In other news, the American Oncology Institute today determined that Glenfiddich does not beneficially treat brain tumors.

UPDATE (More Thoughts): Man, but doesn't that explain a whole hell of a lot? Like the singing?!?

UPDATE 2: If there is something to laugh about, it's listening to the talking heads on the cable news shows try to pronounce the word "parietal" and "glioma." Good times.

William F. Buckley, Jr. Dies at 82
William F. Buckley Jr. died today in his office at his home in Stamford, Connecticut. Arguably the father modern conservatism, the author, National Review publisher, television host, editorialist, occasional CIA deep hatchet man, one-time New York City mayoral candidate and general Liberal-skewerer was found behind his desk were he obviously died doing what he loved best. He had a long bout with emphysema and diabetes. Here's his obit at National Review.

I deem it necessary to say that among the very few people in the world I hold as heroes, WFB was one of them. He shall be missed.

Clinton Campaign Racism Feeding Frenzy
This afternoon there has been a large brouhaha concering comments made by Hillary and her staff of over the last few days intimating racism. Bill Clinton appeared on Al Sharpton's radio program and defended his (and his wife's) PC purity and racial bona fides, but the press and other racebaiting organizations seem to be having none of it. I'll have a link when I find one. In the meantime, I leave you  with this (click for larger version).
